Brothers, come the revolution let's not forget the people
15 May 2008
Yeah, 'Vive la revolution'. I'm fully behind Kenneth Grange's charge on bad design (Voxpop, DW 8 May). I relish the day when a rabble of Howies-wearing designers brandishing the latest copy of Wallpaper storms the offices of Microsoft. Bring on the public trials of those who have offended our eyes, and let us come together for a healthy round of laughter at those less intelligent than ourselves. However, before we set off on our quest to rid the world of centre-aligned ...

'Exclusively indigenous'? Just look at the facts...
15 May 2008
Mark Rae said in your magazine (Business Insight, DW 24 April), 'Look at any large US company and you'll see an almost exclusively indigenous workforce.' Is he referring to Native Americans, who are often referred to as American Indians? Does he not know about the 'melting pot', as the US population refers to itself? Although the Bush administration has made it more difficult to get work visas, they can still be had. Many foreign students come here for design education and end ...

Food labelling move is a huge disservice to the consumer
15 May 2008
I'd like to respond to the Food Standards Agency's failure to consult designers on a European Commission proposal about food labelling (News, DW 24 April). The role of packaging is to inform, engage, protect and, ultimately, sell. If information needs to be incorporated on to packs which affects consumer perception, designers must be consulted at the same time as other interested parties. We have an obligation to optimise communication with consumers, particularly on health-related ...

FutureBrand says digital is essential for branded spaces
15 May 2008
Self-scanners in supermarkets intimidate customers and represent the worst application of digital technology in retail design. But self-service check-in at airports creates a 'win-win situation' for customers and airlines. And ATMs that ask you if you would like 'the usual' should and could have happened years ago, according to FutureBrand.Last week, the consultancy led an evening seminar on digital technology in the branded environment, for the benefit of 60 assembled brand-owners.Tacklin

Inspired, Marc Carter - The English Group
15 May 2008
With regards to inspiration, it's very much the case that, once upon a time, I would obsessively collect aged fashion catalogues, or arcane examples of Japanese publishing design, and would certainly choose a book by its cover. Today, however, what inspires me is passion, determination, integrity - and, in particular, people who step beyond the day job to engage with this space we all occupy and share. The English Group is committed to good causes - we are working on projects in ...

Mean machines
15 May 2008
It's impossible not to admire the design of the AK-47, even though just looking at this deadliest of weapons leaves you feeling morally queasy. The Russian assault rifle was created by the small arms supremo Mikhail Kalashnikov, who featured the latest combat design in his 1947 original. Sixty years on, the London-based design duo Postler Ferguson re-imagined the AK-47 as a paper kit. It comprised five A3 sheets of 150gsm, and was a fragile life-size replica of the lethal original. Now ...

Political expression is alive and well in London's street art
15 May 2008
Your article 'The medium is the message' (News Analysis, DW 1 May) asks where the revolutionary spirit of 1968 is now finding graphic expression. How about on the opposite page, where you plug a new book and exhibition of graffiti artist Blek Le Rat's work? Surely the stencil art of Blek, Banksy and others, which drew thousands recently to an exhibition in a tunnel in London's Waterloo, is the obvious successor to the unpaid political expression of posters in the past? There ...
