Inspired, Matt Willey, Studio 8 Design
17 January 2008
When I was young I was fascinated by Saul Steinberg, by books [of his that] my dad had - The Passport, The Art of Living, The Inspector and The New World. I got a huge amount of pleasure from them, and I still do.He is probably the most enduring and constant influence of a sort related to the visual arts. There were many others, including writers and musicians and painters, but no graphic designers. In my foundation year, adamant that I wanted to be a painter, I came across ...

Snapshots of the future
17 January 2008
Another rich seam of material issues forth this week from the reliably creative terrain of Onedotzero, in the form of a follow-up edition to its successful Motion Blur book and two-hour DVD package. Everything you could want to know about the international practitioners leading this field is packaged stylishly in this tactile felt-bound and embroidered volume, an attempt perhaps to shake off the genre's scratchy, tech-focused image. Onedotzero doesn't need to try that hard, however. As ...

UK product design needs indigenous industries to prosper
17 January 2008
I was very interested to read Jim Dawton's piece on product design in the UK (News Analysis, DW 10 January). Only a handful of names in the UK could be considered as having raised the product design bar, in international terms. The problem is that we don't have any factories left. Consultancies in the UK can turn out ground-breaking Web design and brochure graphics, but as a graduate product designer I have found that the only way to make it big is to work overseas. Consultancies ...

Broome Jenkins (which commissioned illustrator John McFaul to create a 300m-long mural for the airport terminal, pictured above) is a great consultancy with a ...
