A plea for creatives to be a little less... creative with CVs
24 January 2008
As a consultant for a specialist design and creative services recruitment consultancy, I have found myself having the same conversation with a number of leading creative directors in recent months. It appears that there is a growing tendency among junior/mid-level designers and creatives to 'over style' their CVs, by incorporating artwork, and using a wide range of fonts and typefaces. While the intention is clearly to give CVs the 'wow factor', most employers seem to be ...

Behind the scenes at the council
24 January 2008
Over the past fortnight, a miasma of shock has descended on the design sector. It can only look on while the British Council, an institution held dear to it, forges ahead with plans to abolish its specialist sector departments, one of which is design. There is almost unanimous agreement within the arts, design included, that the programme of exhibitions, festivals, performances and events organised by each of the council's specialist sector - or 'artform' - departments, provides ...

Opportunity knocks for designers who network
24 January 2008
I read Emily Pacey's article 'A missed opportunity' (News Analysis, DW 17 January) with interest. What has happened in Liverpool is very disappointing for the design industry, not only there but nationwide. Hopefully, Liverpool will have lots of visitors over the next year, but it would seem they will not see much of the increasing role design is playing in the UK economy. Both Simon Rhodes and Chris Mitchell complain that design is not well represented and blame it on ...

The only response when faced with gunboat diplomacy
24 January 2008
Last week, in response to a confession from David Hillman, you posed the question, 'What dream job have you missed out on by a cat's whisker?' (Voxpop, DW 24 January) Here at Oakwood DC, our hit rate is pretty respectable, but one miss that we really regret was, sadly, the Royal Navy rebrand. Our team even had a day on board an operational frigate to get a real feel for the RN. We made it to the last two, but got the 'Sorry, no... ' call. We didn't argue - we'd seen what ...
