British design escapes shackles of a national
24th September 2009
British design is taking a bit of a beating at the moment. In The New York Times last month, British critic Alice Rawsthorn complained that it’s not what it used to be. Jonathan Glancey in The Guardian concurred, saying, ‘You have to shop around for it.’ And then on BBC Two last Monday, French design star Philippe Starck revealed that he would like to help us to ‘create English style’, as none currently exists. But in a new book commissioned by UK Trade & Investment, ...

Cleaners can earn more than creative directors, it seems...
24th September 2009
It’s disheartening to see the fall in the rates paid to freelances (Up-skill battle, DW 17 September). The building in which I live employs a freelance for the cleaning of the communal areas at £13 per hour more than a London creative director gets paid. Now I know where we can make economies. Are there any creative directors out there with Henry vacuum cleaner and mop-and-bucket experience who want £50 for an hour on the halls, stairs and landings of Langham Place?

Course funding for more creative time is what's needed
24th September 2009
Regarding Glenn Tutssel’s call for three-year foundation courses to improve arts education (Voxpop, DW 17 September), I believe he is being disingenuous. This debate between specialist and generalist education has been banging on for years. My view is that art and design higher education should promote core skills and a depth of understanding in one discipline with transferable skills in other areas, while retaining completely open experimental options, usually over summer, ...

Inspired - Luke Manning
24th September 2009
Inspirations in both my career and life, as the two seem to go hand in hand, come from people, personalities and attitudes. I studied at the Somerset College of Art and Technology. It was here I was blessed with being tutored by William Hunt, called Widge, an eccentric man who always made you laugh, and Malcolm Swatridge, who needs no introduction. They believed in ideas, wit and the craft that followed a moment of genius. The process from briefing to execution was one of ...

Spare a thought for the founders, new leaders
24th September 2009
I write in response to the news that Paul Brazier and Simon Sankarayya are taking over at D&AD (DW 17 September). The organisation has expanded hugely from the small community of pioneers who started it. Without Edward Booth-Clibborn it wouldn’t be there at all, and he is a former president. Whatever the reasons for Booth-Clibborn’s departure, they should now be forgotten. Any organisation that denies and fails to embrace its founders is diminished. Confucius says ...

Stoke it up
24th September 2009
The promotional material for the inaugural British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent does a fine job: with its dashes of hot, fluorescent pink, it heralds a vibrant and innovative series of events - a refreshing step away from staid and traditional pottery connotations. But tapping into the city’s history is also a key element of the biennial, which is part of a wider programme by the North Staffordshire Regeneration Project. With exhibitions and installations dotted around the city, ...
