  • Failure to exploit paper stocks shows lack of imagination

    25 October 2007

How refreshing it was to read Paul Jenkins' comments about paper stock (Inspired, DW 11 October). Unfortunately, in internal communications, paper is often forgotten as a design tool, and 170gsm silk is used, time and time again. With a little imagination, paper stocks can lift a design to another level, and research into cutting guides and printing finishes can help employees engage with the communication process and react to the message being communicated. Some ...

  • Passion bears fruit for those Innocent-era entrepreneurs

    25 October 2007

Was it just me who thought your story 'We're all Innocent' (DW 11 October) offered rather myopic insight? What about the motivation of the young, and enthusiastic entrepreneurs of the past 20 years who wanted a new, direct way of talking to the consumer? Fed up with staid, corporate design and straight-laced copy, these mavericks wanted a no-nonsense approach to their consumers. Passion became the buzz word. Through great products, tone of voice and approachable design, they echoed ...

  • Quality control is vital, but drop elitist approach

    25 October 2007

I think Michael Peters has a good point (Business Insight, DW 25 October). As a nation, we have thousands of mediocre graduates leaving mediocre design, communication and multimedia courses every year. There are, however, many non-established, talented designers who, unfortunately, don't get a platform on which to shine, generally because they don't have the resources of the bigger studios or ad agencies that would afford them the opportunity to pitch, free or otherwise. I ...

  • Shoot from the hip

    25 October 2007

Everyone knows that rock and roll is about abandon, not precision. The squalling, folding feedback ululating from Jack White's amp is the sound of deal-making with the devil, a fight for control between creativity and randomness. It's fitting, then, that cult photographic company Lomography, with its unpredictable, super-plastic, devil-may-care cameras, should turn to the White Stripes for a very limited edition design of its Holga and Diana+ models (only 200 of each have been made). It ...

  • What exactly is the purpose of this new London gallery?

    25 October 2007

I was keen to visit Rivington Place, the first new-build public gallery in London in almost 40 years - all very exciting. Except it isn't. A filler in the belly of Shoreditch's ever-expanding waistline, it promises a lot, yet fails to deliver. From the opening exhibition, a listless look at London's immigrant population, to the indulgent exterior contrasting sharply with the poky layout inside, I was left flat and confused. Its website claims it will be an important national ...
