BBC news identity cuts through the television clutter
29 May 2008
Seeing your headline that the BBC TV news rebrand causes fits (News in Depth, DW 1 May) reminded me of the 'nanny state' element that is still alive and well - or would a better term be the 'mother grundies'? Sitting in the UK, your choice of news channels must be quite limited. As someone spending much time travelling around Africa and the Middle East, I rely on TV news to keep me in touch. And the whole bouquet is there, from BBC, CNN and Sky, to Al Jazeera and Bloomberg. Well ...

Brand revivals: justifiably nostalgic or sentimental?
29 May 2008
Why do we hanker after the old days of Opal Fruits, Marathon, Jif and Immac (Voxpop, DW 22 May)? The products are still with us in all but name, so what's the difference? The nostalgia they conjure up is of long, hot sunny days when we could kick a ball around in the street until the sun went down. That's why I want to eat a Jublee, drink a Tab, watch Blake's Seven, drive a Ford Capri and slide over the bonnet like Bodie and Doyle in The Professionals. But my hero of ...

The trial trail
29 May 2008
Long before a design goes into production, long before the marketing and PR kick in, and long before it gets seen at a trade fair, it's just an idea in the head of a designer. They might sketch it and make a scale model, and even get so far as a prototype to see if the idea works as a full-size thing. Even at this stage, it's still a long way from production, and may only ever be an experiment, a trial-and-error piece to test the limits of an idea. Curator and Royal College of Art senior ...
