A moving story with a creative happy ending
3 May 2007
I was pleased to read your feature Space exploration, after starting this same journey ourselves. Having acquired another company at the beginning of the year, we're forced to look for larger premises that will allow all 62 of us to operate effectively under one roof. If there's one thing we've learned over our 22 years (and three properties), it is that change is inevitable, and if you're intending to be around in a few years, you have to build flexibility into your planning. ...

An ace café, with quite a rubbish bank attached
3 May 2007
What a fantastic idea - coffee shops in high street banks (DW 15 March). However, it would be nice to think Abbey and its high street rivals could get some of the basics right first. Aside from the fact that transferring my account to Abbey was a nightmare (the £40 inducement to transfer didn't even come close to compensating for the hassle), the process of advising a change of address was tedious. I tried NatWest, where I had to fill in a form by hand, and it was unable ...

Clients must help in spreading climate change awareness
3 May 2007
With regard to Corinne Hitching's letter on climate change, I agree with her argument - as designers, we are responsible for every element of a piece of packaging, or for the product itself. We decide on the size, shape, materials, packaging and graphics, and at every stage there are many choices. More often than not, it's a choice between taking a responsible, sustainable route, which will cost a little more, and the easy, on-budget route. If we can all work collaboratively and ...

Japanese underbelly
3 May 2007
In a culture renowned for its pulsating urban districts, emblazoned with imagery selling lifestyles of every sort, it's strange that it has taken this long for the first book dedicated to Japan's graffiti movement to surface. The argument, say the writers, is that graffiti arrived relatively late - only by the early 1990s when young people headed to the US and encountered hip hop did this global subculture start transforming the sprawling suburbs of Tokyo and Osaka. The book's title, RackGaki, .

The growth in on-line shopping and the move towards specialist stores is changing the face of retail in London, with a knock-on effect for high street retailers and interior design consultancies. Therefore, an exhibition and a series of talks at New London Architecture called Shop - which examine the future of shopping and show that retail developments in the capital are, in fact, prospering - is very timely. With exhibition and graphic design by Manha and its creative director ...
