  • Bill of health

    31 May 2007

'An apple a day keeps the doctor away' runs the old epithet, but our approach to staying healthy and what that really means becomes ever more complex. A growing awareness of physical and mental well-being is often shrouded in ambiguity, but personal experience of illness often lays bare such philosophising. An encounter with lung cancer prompted designer Chris Allen to initiate a fundraising project, Print Run, inviting 20 design companies to each create a poster in response to the theme ...

Organic cosmetics are not necessarily new, but they do appear to be coming up trumps with the second part of the consumer product mantra - 'improved'.While there is still scepticism surrounding the use of organic products, as opposed to scientifically proven ranges, a fresh wave of natural and ethical - yet luxurious, good-looking and effective - cosmetics are starting to appear. The latest research from Mintel's global new products database shows that there have been about ...

  • Design your way out of the corporate straitjacket

    31 May 2007

In response to Stephen Willard, all designers can start with a blank canvas - it's designing within corporate guidelines where the real skill comes in. Many think guidelines are a straitjacket for designers, but I agree with Rick Osman (DW 24 May): our challenge comes in bringing the brand to life within the client's existing framework. Think of the shambles that would occur if the corporate police did take their foot off the gas and let any old creative through the corporate labyrinth ...

    Where do ideas come from?

  • Is it time for a tax on wasteful packaging?

    31 May 2007

After reading your article on corporate responsibility, I was duly greeted by headlines announcing the potential introduction of penalties or rewards for the poor or successful management of household waste. This made me cringe - knowing how much we generate for our customers. As I continued to pick this story up through other media, it became clear that the blame has been dumped squarely on the consumer. The issue of over-packaging, once high on the agenda, seems to have ...

  • The Apprentice is a setback for design

    31 May 2007

I am writing with regard to Jack Stark's letter. I could not agree more with his comments on the misunderstanding of designers' job roles in the BBC2 show The Apprentice. Recently I watched the episode where two teams were asked to create a trainer brand. The methods used to generate the concept were an embarrassment to the design industry. This did not reflect the way a creative project should be tackled. I fail to see the purpose of broadcasting a show portraying a brand ...
