  • Showing a tendency for being in-the-know

    4 February 1999

One criticism often levelled at the design industry is that it is such a small world. You can't do anything without word getting round. But Design Week has just got wind of the exception that proves the rule. Word has it, that at a recent meeting between industry big-wigs, Identica Partnership's Michael Peters sat with Design Business Association chairman Colin Porter. 'Who is the director of the DBA these days, Colin?' asked Peters. Observers swear there wasn't a hint of irony.

OK, let's dream a little. You put your work up at your degree show, stick the corners back down on a piece of curling foam board, then you sit there and wait. And wait. And wait some more. This is it, you tell yourself. This is the day Gill/Fletcher/Peters/Brody/Dumbar/Carson (tailor the dream to match your decade) walks into Nowhereville's Poly degree show and gives you the dreamiest of dream jobs. You can wake up now. We all know, it simply doesn't happen.

  • We need champions to lead design forward

    4 February 1999

It's ironic that an industry full of creative leaders should lack leadership and a public persona. In the public eye, design is the stuff of fashion, football and celebrity chefs - a lifestyle issue rather than a commercial force that can enhance business performance and quality of life. Look at the way the national media portrays it (see Private View, page 13).
