  • Creativity should come first, because digital is only a tool

    4 September 2008

Guy Lane's article 'Negotiating the digital maze' on the digital revolution (Business Insight, DW 14 August) raised some interesting points about how we use digital technologies. While the digital revolution and the Internet have provided us with more opportunities for client services, what Lane doesn't mention are the challenges consultancies face when it comes to using digital in the design stages of a project. There is no doubt that digital technologies are a huge asset ...

  • From Bristol to London, cities need to declutter

    4 September 2008

I completely agree with your piece (Comment, DW 21 August) that UK cities (and towns) need to improve the quality of their pedestrian environments, wayfinding/ signage and public transport systems. A trip to the continent a short while ago reminded me of how much better other countries are at doing this than we are. And certainly, where we are - in Bristol - needs to pay attention to this. There is still too much visual clutter and a 'free for all' which quite often distracts ...

  • Inspired

    4 September 2008

I consider myself a pretty lucky person. I've worked for - and with - some very talented and inspirational people from various design disciplines. And those experiences have had a big influence on the way I work.I made my living as a freelance and when doing the rounds, it proved to me the importance of working as a team. Anyone on the freelance circuit knows that feeling of isolation you get, and it was something I could never get used to. I love the process of coming up with ...

  • Lego minifigures - a higher honour than Oscars and Baftas

    4 September 2008

It was great to see Lego minifigures - a true design classic - get some recognition in your pages (Toys feature, DW 21 August). However, the claim that Harrison Ford is the only actor to have been Lego-ised twice is wrong. That honour also falls to our very own Alfred Molina, who has been immortalised both as Doctor Octopus and Satipo (his character from Raiders of the Lost Ark, pictured). Hopefully, he'll overtake Ford when Lego finally releases a playset based ...

  • There's a place for religious debate, but not in Design Week

    4 September 2008

It's not often I read a piece in Design Week and come away feeling both bewildered and disappointed. Yet with Hugh Pearman's 'witty' piece 'Genesis of an idea' (Private View, DW 14 August), I did exactly that. I'd appreciate a genuine exploration of the links between 'religion' and 'design' (though admittedly I wouldn't expect to see it in the Private View section of Design Week). Instead, Pearman merely attempts to disguise personal quarrels with religion under an ultra-thin ...
