  • Ads for art's sake

    8 May 2008

For an industry blessed with several geniuses, the biggest budgets and the largest egos, the art of advertising hangs infrequently on gallery walls. But its power is undeniable - just as designers can name record sleeves that pulled them into their profession, art directors cite old Benson & Hedges layouts that did the same. These are images etched deep into our collective cultural consciousness, whether we like what they stand for or not. Presumably, this is what the upcoming Advertising ..

  • Clients need better understanding of what designers do

    8 May 2008

Though I wasn't at the Meeting of Minds event, from the article (News, DW 1 May) it seems like a lot of the same old issues were brought up. The designer/client relationship is, as we know, very symbiotic. As designers we are very aware of the clients' needs and how they operate. It's not the same for the client. I find that most clients and most people are ignorant of what we do and who we are. I'm interested in the education of clients in the 'nature of design' and the current ...

  • Inspired, Nick Vaus - Dew Gibbons

    8 May 2008

There's no single thing that inspires me - there are many. Inspiration is all around me, whether printed or three-dimensional, new or old, people or places. When I see that something has been approached differently or that makes me approach things differently, I feel inspired. The key is a connection, whether through beauty, humour or the darn-right quirky. Can you imagine a world without inspirations? Where would we go when we need that spark? My creative eye is always roaming. ...

    8 May 2008

Shame on you, Design Week! Your writer David Benady contacted me to comment on the revamp of the Daily Mirror and the Daily Sport for his feature (Stop press, DW 1 May). However, he clearly found my views unpalatable for his piece and didn't include them. Having now read it, I can understand why. How DW could give space, let alone a double-page spread, to what I can only describe as - well, let's not mince words - shit! is beyond me. Yes, I know that DW is about representing a ...

  • The editorial design winner didn't quite make the grade

    8 May 2008

I am rather disappointed with the shortlist and eventual winner of your recent Design Week Awards 2008 editorial design sector. I found the shortlisted work soulless, self-indulgent and with very little visual impact. None of the work explored photography in any great detail and the typography was very monotone. Furthermore, the editorial message from the eventual winner (At This Rate booklet by Studio 8 Design for Rainforest Action Network, pictured above) was unclear. Showcasing ...
