Ah, those were the days - cold hands and sticky footwear
9 April 2009
What a brilliant article by Michael Peters (A lost world, DW 26 March).I started out in graphic design in the early 1970s during the three-day week - no rubbish collection, fewer jobs - and carried on through the excesses of the 1980s and 1990s.Somewhere along the line, I worked in a cow shed where we defrosted our hands in the morning in front of a Super Ser.When the type came back from the typesetters, we had to be careful and ingenious with the ...

Beauty comes in many forms, even Gherkin-shaped
9 April 2009
It's hard to choose just one thing of beauty in Britain, as you asked last week (Voxpop, DW 2 April). But one thing I enjoy seeing on pretty much a daily basis, which never ceases to please my eye, is 30 St Mary Axe, also known as the Gherkin. My gallery is in east London, so I'm lucky to see it from many different angles and viewpoints. It also reminds me of a giant Fabergé egg. It is undoubtedly one of London's most striking buildings, and in a city awash with ...

Inspired: Mark McArthur-Christie: Freeman Christie
9 April 2009
You find inspiration in the strangest places. This, though, is the first time I’ve found it in a car park in the middle of Oxford.Take a look at the original sign. More than 400 words in reversed-out, close-packed type, it is so confusing that it took more than half an hour to read and understand. At night the colour scheme made it almost impossible to decipher. It was so bad that local tramps were earning a few coins explaining to people how it all works. We ...

It's irresponsible to lure too many on to design degrees
9 April 2009
Adrian Shaughnessy may be right when he says that design graduates are equipped for life in the modern world (Private View, DW 2 April), but his view is not widely shared, so his call to have more of them is irresponsible. It's a cruel fact that, outside of the design industry, little value is placed on a design degree and many employers will lump it in with media studies and sports science as something of little value. Too many young people are coming out of universities ...

Underestimating the regions is a big mistake
9 April 2009
After reading Lynda Relph-Knight's thoughts about the strength of design in the regions (Comment, DW 26 March), I reflected on the title of the piece and wondered who is underestimating the power of the regions. It certainly is not the regions themselves, which are aware of their potential and have established networking groups. Some of these groups - whether with inclusive or exclusive membership - provide more than simple networking opportunities. Design Leicestershire ...

Worlds between the covers
9 April 2009
The credit crunch is not the ideal environment for high-end photography books, which is all the more reason to celebrate them at this year's And/or Book Awards. The awards were rebranded last year with a new logo drawn by David Hockney, and winners will be announced later this month. According to photography category judge David Chandler, director of Photoworks, we are still in a buoyant phase of photography books. 'The production standards and design quality is going up all the time. ...
