A glimpse through the Google glasses

If sci-fi films are to be believed, wearable technology is the future (even if it does make you look like a bit of a prat).

And being somewhat ahead of the curve, Google has been developing Project Glass, ‘smart’ spectacles that can be worn like normal glasses, but act like a smartphone – receiving sound, images and video and responding to voice commands.

After showcasing the glasses at the Google I/O conference last year, Google has now released footage of how the world looks through the glasses, showing users taking photo and video, surfing the web, following GPS directions etc.

The user interface does seem pretty neat, with an unobtrusive display in the top corner of the screen, but revealingly the video doesn’t show any shots of people actually wearing the glasses – which make you look like this:

The Google glasses will be available in a range of colours – ‘charcoal, tangerine, shale, cotton and sky’ and will cost around $1500 (£980).

Ahead of a wider release, Google says it is seeking ‘bold, creative individuals’ to pioneer (and presumably debug) the technology.

People (in the US only unfortunately) can apply to get the glasses through Twitter and Google+, using the hashtag #ifihadglass. For more information visit www.google.com/glass/start.
