Beauty in the Making
Paper. Not the most fascinating of starting points for a five-day event, you may think. Well, GFSMith paper makers are proving otherwise.
Beauty in the Making is a five-day celebration of design and, yes, paper, kicking off in London’s Bloomsbury next week.
The paper-mongers are collaborating with Monotype typeface library; It’s Nice That and the British Council’s Architecture, Design and Fashion department for a series of installations, live demonstrations, workshops, and talks.
Type-geeks will be excited to hear that Monotype will be unveiling the never-before-seen original signed artworks from the Gill Sans archive; while British Council’s Architecture, Design and Fashion department will reveal the creative process behind these special design projects from eight of their creative partners including Bibliotheque, Anthony Burrill, Objectif, Julia, Bianca Wendt and Kellenberger-White.
Those keen to get in on the paper action can take part in experimental l letterpress and paper making workshops and a handmade envelope experience; and if that becomes tiring the Espresso room will be on hand to help, with – we’re promised – innovative ‘coffee chemistry.’
There’s a brilliant range of speakers lined up for evening and lunchtime talks, including Pentagram partner Angus Hyland, Simon Waterfall, Supermundane, publishing platform NoBrow’s Sam Arthur, Kate Moross, illustrator Mr Bingo, and NB Studio’s co-founder Nick Finney.
Beauty in the Making runs from 23 – 27 April at Victoria House Basement, Southampton Row, London WC1B
Gill sans is such a classic typeface. I think it’s great that we are able to see Eric Gills original designs.
