The new, improved Design Week

It’s finally here. The redesigned Design Week has hit the news stands. But if you can’t wait for your copy here is a peek of the new design, led by art director Sam Freeman.

Cover

It’s all change.

The old font Univers has been replaced by Akkurat font from Line To and the coated paper stock gives the printed images more snap to ‘enhance the appearance of colours’, explains Freeman. He has also introduced a new trim size and a seven- column grid to give more flexibility for  layouts.

New features.

New regular features include Best of the Web, and a Don’t Miss section, highlighting the Design Week team’s hot tips of things to see that week. A more comprehensive diary section will be updated weekly online for subscribers at www.designweek.co.uk

Illustration.

The magazine features more illustrations in the Private View section. Five illustrators - Andy Potts, Ben Tallon, Liam Bardsley, Cristiana Conceiro and Iain Cox - will work in sequence to illustrate the words of our four regular columnists.

‘I wanted to create more flexibility throughout the magazine and a more crafted and considered aesthetic,’ says Freeman. We may be biased - but we think this has been achieved. What do you think?

  • Just wanted to express my disappointment of the new 'subscriber only' approach to the site from now on. I choose my magazine subscriptions very carefully on a yearly basis, based heavily on the content that I read over the year from the website, and up until now Design Week was placed on the top of my list when my other mag subscriptions expire. However, having seen the direction you have decided to take, I feel that it would probably be wiser to maintain the subscriptions that I currently have, as they aren't asking me to make a choice of all or nothing. I appreciated the information that you offered for free, but I honestly think this approach could be counter productive, and effectively drive more people to competitor sites and magazines where the audience isn't excluded on the basis of subscription.

  • I like the clean stucture to the redesign. Always a good idea to have a simple backdrop when there is such a smogasbord of news and visual items. Now let's us have some really good covers. We deserve it.

  • Looking forward to experiencing it in real life. Looks nice and clean - echo Mike Dempsey's comment. As for David, are you a client who indulges in free pitches? If it's so great then pay up rather than just sponging off the subscribers!

  • I wanted to clarify my position, which was the apparent subscription only lock on the blog section, which i deemed to be a bit 'extreme', but can now see it must have been a glitch due to the launch and had since changed, so take back the point. 'Anonymous', I can see why you have a hang up about free pitches, If your design intellect is on the same level as your comment, I doubt you ever get past the pitching stage. Stop looking at the 'pretty pictures' and start reading the content, you may find that you might actually learn something.

  • great stuff!

But has it got any thicker? Its been very lightweight over the last 6 months or so!! And if you take away the ads, it could go down to a A4 4PP newsletter!
