Cada creates market concept for Gyungki department store food hall
Cada has designed a new food hall for the Gyungki department store in Seoul, South Korea.
The consultancy was appointed to the project in September 2011 to create a 6500m2 food court, having previously worked with the client, Shinsegae Group, to design the Dean and Deluca deli franchise for the store.
It was briefed to create a ‘one stop shop’ gourmet food hall with an ‘international influence’ within an existing food space, with offers including fruit and vegetables, meat, confectionary and wine. The space also incorporates a restaurant and the Cada-designed Dean and Deulca store.
David Callcott, Cada director, says, ‘We wanted to create a food market in the centre of the food court that can easily be adapted for special occasions and events. It’s based on a typical market concept, so we showed a lovely expanse of roof, similar to the one in Borough Market [in London.]’
The overall market concept was created with different areas adapted according to the product sold. Callcott says a ‘neutral palette’ has been used throughout, while timber has been incorporated in the wine area and for seating.
Other materials and features include ceramic tile walls, Corian counter tops and booth seating and porcelain floor tiles.
Callcott says, ‘The palette is quite neutral and sensible in terms of the amount of space: there’s so much product to show off, so we had to make sure they were able to talk.’
He adds, ‘You have to consider the habits of the local shoppers and the occasion, but most people now travel the world so we’ve created something that’s properly international.’
