David Shrigley’s big Southbank show

Artist David Shrigley, whose recent activities have included tattooing his works on to the limbs of fans and animating an 18m-tall naked man, is to be the subject of a major retrospective at London’s Southbank next year.

David Shrigley: Brain Activity will take over the upper galleries of the Hayward and feature a full range of Shrigley’s work, covering drawing, animation, painting, photography, sculpture and, er… taxidermy.

Shrigley’s wry musings on life, death and everything in-between will be presented at a series of scales, from 80 previously undisplayed drawings to a huge, in-situ wall painting and a collection of bronze weapons – 2010’s work Swords and Daggers.

A series of films and installations will also be on dispay, including a series of headless stuffed animals, ranging in size from squirrel to ostrich.

Shrigley’s animation The Letter, which depicts an anonymous letter of absence to Mrs Teacher, will be projected on to the exterior of the Royal Festival Hall from dusk every day.
