Designers announced for new £8 million maritime museum

A new maritime museum worth £8 million is set to be built in Derry, Northern Ireland.

Architectural practice Todd Architects has been appointed to complete the project, alongside design consultancy Tandem.

The Maritime Museum and Archive Centre, which is a working title, will be located across three listed buildings at a former military base at Ebrington, Derry.

It will include galleries, reading rooms/archives and “educational facilities”, according to Derry City and Strabane District Council, which has appointed the design teams.

The project aims to “develop a regional Maritime Museum and Archive” that gives an “international platform” to Northern Ireland’s maritime heritage, and “ensures the preservation of the collections and greater access and engagement to the collections and heritage of the city”.

The architect was appointed by Derry City Council to “undertake the design and manage the construction” of the new museum, while Tandem has been appointed to work on interpretation design across the galleries.

Todd Architects was one of five architectural practices to pitch for the project, while Tandem won the pitch from a shortlist of three consultancies.

A consultancy will also be appointed to complete the branding for the new museum. An opening date for the museum is yet to be announced.
