English Heritage seeks designers for Tintagel Castle bridge project

A two-stage design competition has been launched, which will award a design team with a £4 million contract to link the 13th Century castle with the mainland via a new bridge.

3TintagelDesigners are being sought to design a new bridge linking the 13th Century Tintagel Castle from its rocky outcrop to the Cornish mainland.

A competition has been announced setting out the provision of a £4 million budget, which will include fees for the winning team and costs.

English Heritage has already identified potential crossing points for the new 72m bridge, which will stand 28m higher than the current crossing.

The solution will “improve both visitor’s understanding of the site and access” according to English Heritage, which says it envisages “an elegant, structurally daring concept” in keeping with Tintagel and its Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surroundings.

English Heritage chief executive Kate Mavor says: “We are looking for a design team that will deeply connect with Tintagel Castle; both its landscape and its history, to deliver something special.”

The winning design will have to cope with projected numbers of around 250,000 and high wind conditions while also improving “physical and intellectual access”, enhancing “visual and sensory pleasure” and introduce new view points.

Another objective is that it will “engage visitors with Tintagel’s history, legends and literature.”

Malcolm Reading Consultants is handling the two-stage design competition. For more information head here The deadline for expressions of interest is 21 July.
