Euphoric Serenity

Japanese photographer Takeshi Suga has something of a philosophical starting point to his work.

‘I believe there’s complete calmness at the height of pure excitement’, he says.

As such, the title of his new show is Euphoric Serenity, which he describes as ‘the state I was in at the time of making these photographs I’m exhibiting here, all of which were taken with analogue cameras.’

Naturally, given Suga’s predilection for analogue, it’s London’s Lomography Gallery that’s showing the work, thanks to the brand and artist’s shared passion for eschewing digital techniques.

Suga says, ‘I love analogue. It’s more physical and human than digital; it has many unique characters, both good and bad just like us.’

However, the dreamy, colourful images are almost superhuman in their fairytale-like aesthetic, such as this psychedelic Cherry Blossom snap:

Another highlight of the show is That Summer Swing, a sublime fairground image that distracts from the cold, wet January gloom:

Suga has previously shot for publications including NME, Dazed Digital and Huffington Post Arts.

Euphoric Serenity runs until 28 February at Lomography Gallery Store East London, 117 Commercial Street, London E1
