Experiments in analogue and digital in The Frontroom
Illustrators Jack Featherstone and Max Parsons are taking Template, a new site specific work, to The Frontroom Gallery in Cambridge where they’ve experimented with analogue and digital processes.
The collaborators – who were formerly part of the now disbanded ISO Collective with Kate Moross, Hans Lo and Will Samuel – have worked together on ‘bringing the physicality out of digital forms’ in the run up-to the show, according to Featherstone.
The Frontroom space is the studio of Cambridge-based consultancy The District, and is a modest size, complete with a fireplace alcove and radiators.
‘We took the dimensions of the space and rebuilt it on a computer grid, before deconstructing a version of it,’ says Featherstone.
On top of this, ‘expressionistic freeform brush strokes’ developed in Illustrator have been projected onto the walls, says Featherstone, who has painted around them.
The piece is ‘restrained’ says Featherstone who has worked in black and white as a deliberate departure from recent shows in The Frontroom which he felt were ‘too loud’ for the space.
Colour has been injected through hanging digital prints, which give the effect of screen printing.
Template runs from 18 March- 20 April at The District, The Frontroom, The Gatehouse, 23-25 Gwydir Street, Cambridge CB1
