Feasting, with Bompas & Parr

One time ‘jellymongers’ Bompass & Parr are now being touted as ‘provocative players on the global food scene’ as they publish a book this week entitled Powerful Recipes & Savage Tales of Food for Feasting.

The pair who have distinctively ploughed a furrow in food architecture and experiential design, have notably created a chocolate waterfall, a jelly golf-course,a ‘walk-in-cocktail’, and a fast-food drive-through in Selfridges.

I’m not too sure what the global food scene is – everyone needs to eat – but if it does exist these gourmands-cum-designers are most probably part of it.

Like the events and the stunts Bompas & Parr have become known for, the book is intensely fun, lavish, and ridiculous. Although cynics will say it’s equally pointless.

Mrs Beeton or Delia this ain’t. It is instead a joyful and extravagant way to think about food, spaces and entertainment.

Here’s the knockout punch though, most of the ideas in here start off as everyday ingredients; the component parts of an elaborate result, yet with quite a simple process to get there.

Feasting

Incendiary bananas, ‘Glitter Ham’, Desperate Dan style ‘Cow Pie’, and Cocktail of The Future can be found amid chapters including ‘Magic & Food,’ ‘Service & Uniforms’, and ‘The Morning After.’ This is an unapologetic redesign of food itself.
