Finders Keepers: A Survey of Collecting
A man seemingly suffocating on his own hair, an image of a revolver pointing at the viewer, and another of someone playing golf could make for a broad church of inspiration.
These are just some of the subjects covered at a new Michael Hoppen Gallery show, which sees Hoppen throw the doors open on the best of his private collection.
There are 130 photographs making up this composite show, which takes in anonymous 19th century scenes and vintage boxing bouts, as well as post-war shots and fashion photography.
Hoppen’s collection, some 20 years in the making, includes travel, anthropological, and just about any other kind of photography you can think of.
It seems there is more weighting toward the vintage stuff in this selection, which will be presented over three floors.
Among those featured you’ll spot Charles Jones’ luminous peach; Nikolai Kuleschow’s surveillance balloon; Fredrich Seidenstucker’s kitchen maids; Anton Stankowski’s photogram of a ghostly baby; anonymous images of birds on wires; and the worrying perspective of a pistol pointed directly at the viewer – you.
A book, Finders Keepers will accompany the show and features all 130 images in the order they were acquired rather than their age, with accompanying notes from Hoppen about how he discovered them and the history of each.
Finder Keepers: A Survey of Collecting, runs from 12 December – 31 January 2013 at the Michael Hoppen Gallery, 3 Jubilee place, SW3. The Book Finders Keepers – 20 years: A Dealer’s Collection is priced £50 and available from Michael Hoppen Gallery
