Glass Couture at Vessel Gallery
Events as dramatic as near-fatal car accidents can really put things into perspective. For French glassmaker Jeremy Maxwell Wintrebert, such an accident ignited a passion to become a ‘glass master’ – and during many months in hospital he read all he could about the practice.
Now, the artist is set to exhibit a number of his large-scale filigree glass pieces at a show, Glass Couture, opening at London’s Vessel Gallery this month.
The exhibition, entitled Glass Couture, features a number of new works such as the Void series, as well as his Clouds light installation. The Spirits Fruit works, according to Vessel Gallery, are ‘spontaneous, free and explosive at the same time.’
The Vessel Gallery adds, ‘His work often echoes the feeling of billowing textiles on the brink of collapse and the pieces combine both power and frailty.’
These huge Spirit Fruit pieces are a marked contrast to the precise, detailed forms of the Void collection, which showcase the artist’s skill and artistry with glass.
Wintrebert says, ‘I create pieces I like that have a contrast with a space. The result seems to call up a feeling of “nature” in these often very geometrical, minimalist spaces.’
The Glass Couture show forms part of the Contemporary Glass Society’s Glass Games 2012, a UK-wide push to bring glass to the masses though exhibitions, events, sales and workshops. For more information on this visit www.cgs.org.uk
