Google plans to release “luxurious” smartwatch in Tag Heuer partnership
Google, Tag Heuer and Intel say they are aiming to create a watch that will be “both luxurious and seamlessly connected to its user’s daily life”. The watch will be powered by Intel and Android Wear.
Google is linking up with Intel and Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer to create a “luxurious” smartwatch that will take on the likes of the Apple Watch and the Samsung Gear S watch.
The Google announcement comes shortly after Apple launched its Apple Watch product, which is designed to be used in conjunction with iPhone.
Google, Tag Heuer and Intel say they are aiming to create a watch that will be “both luxurious and seamlessly connected to its user’s daily life”. The watch will be powered by Intel and Android Wear.
Tag Heuer chief executive Jean-Claude Biver says: “Swiss watchmaking and Silicon Valley is a marriage of technological innovation with watchmaking credibility.”
Intel corporate vice-president and general manager of the new devices group Michael Bell says: “We believe that wearable technology is going to take off, but this is not something that will be driven by tech companies only.
“Wearable technology is very personal – it’s something that represents either who you are or who you want to be seen as – and certainly tech companies are not necessarily the best people to figure that out.”
The watch will be released towards the end of the year. There are no current details of design, functionality or price.
As well as taking on the Apple Watch, other key rivals that the new Google/Intel/Tag Heuer watch will face include Samsung’s Gear S Watch, which was released last year and can operate independently of a smartphone.
Am I the only one laughing at them cutting the cheese? … Yes? I must be 12.
