Hello Cheeky!
Taking in intimations of telephone doodles and comic book capers and mixing them with a large dose of mischief, the aesthetic behind Hattie Stewart’s illustrations is as distinctive as it is playful.
Her signature cartoon eyes and black-marker doodlings have come to be a welcome staple of the London illustration scene of recent years, and are aptly summed up in the title of her debut solo show, Hello Cheeky.
The exhibition, to be staged in Brighton from next week, will present a series of works created by what Stewart terms ‘Doodle-Bombing’ – taking magazine titans such as Vogue, Interview, Playboy and The Face and gamely drawing all over their cover stars and mastheads.
The work is at first glance jovial and glib, though on closer inspection there are more sinister undertones at play – tears and bones jostle for space with the hearts.
However, Stewart – who dubs herself a ‘professional doodler’ – has her tongue firmly lodged in her cheek. How else could you explain a seemingly vomiting popstrel, Lorde? Or Marilyn Monroe’s trout pout?!
