Memories

Cancer directly affects one in three people in the UK, so its not surprising that those who have been touched by the disease and its survivors are keen to use their skills to raise money for charities that work to fight it.

The same is true of freelance writer and magazine editor Garrick Webster, who, along with Rishi Sodha from Designers Against Human Rights Abuse, street art studio Subism founder Stuart Boyd and One Ten Eleven Media’s Antony Kiston, wanted to give something back after loosing his father in 2008.

The result is ongoing project Memories, which will see 12 personal stories of cancer paired with visual responses from artists and illustrators. The book will be sold at the price of £10 to raise money for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres.

Webster says, ‘The architecture and layout of Maggie’s is very sensitive to healing and overcoming medical problems so it’s a good fit.’

The book will feature six entries from those that have lost loved ones and six from or about cancer survivors. Organisers wanted to foster new talent through the project so a brief was opened up to the public and two of the best entries were chosen.

Although the book is not due to launch until July, to whet reader’s appetites Sodha has created a beautiful ‘dream’ not-for-sale version of the book, complete with leather embossed cover, rough-edged paper and different typography for each of the twelve stories.

The organisers have also allowed us to show a sneak preview of some of the pages and will be releasing more information about the printers next week. Keep an eye on http://memories.subism.co.uk/ for more information.
