Web Heroines Emerge conference

Proving that sisters really are doing it for themselves is Web Heroines’ inaugural Emerge conference, a mainly-online and mainly-female conference taking place  in  January that throws the spotlight on women working in digital design.

Though men aren’t excluded the focus is very much feminine - with the 1940s vintage inspired website design and hand crafted gift bags for the conference, created by conference organiser Keri Lambden.

The aim of the conference is to exchange information and ideas, as well as highlighting the success of women in a male dominated industry- only 12 per cent of the design/tech work force are female, according to Emerge organisers.

Lambden says, ‘I went to conference about a year ago and there were only a couple of other women there. Although there are some women tech groups, it’s very much perceived as a male dominated industry.’

Covering graphics, web, mobile, apps and gaming, Emerge will feature live workshops and talks, mostly online, though there will also be a panel debate at London’s British Library.

Lambden says that following on from the great reception this year’s event has received, it’s hoped that Web Heroines will partner with other women tech groups including She Says and The Next Women on further Emerge conferences in the future.
