Illustrating Folk
Can mystifying late jazz musician Sun Ra sell clothes? How about death – can that help shirts and the like fly off the rails?
Clothing brand Folk seems to think so, having enlisted illustrator Emily Evans to create an exhibition in its east London store.
While many of the pieces on show are new works, some have been brought together from her recent rather wonderful show Calling Planet Earth, which was inspired by the aforementioned Sun Ra Arkestra.
This body of work draws on the cosmic myths, philosophy and dazzling stage outfits of the musician to create mixed-media collages with techniques including letterpress, hand painting, foiling, and screen printing.
The new works on show include previously unseen pieces from Evans’ Family series, looking to darker themes as debt, divorce and conflict. There will also be pieces from the Death series – and equally dark collection of works that explore child solders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Evans’ work will cover five walls of the store, and the show marks the first in a series of exhibitions of emerging illustrators, designers and artists in the store.
Emily Evans x Folk runs until February 2013 at Folk Clothing, 11 Dray Walk, London E1
