Apple has launched the iPhone SE, a smaller, cheaper version of its flagship smartphone which it describes as “an iconic design, reinvented from the inside out”.

The iPhone SE features a 4-inch display and will retail starting at £359 in the UK.

Apple’s most recent model before the SE – the iPhone 6 – features a 4.7-inch display and starts at £459.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, says: “iPhone SE is an exciting new idea – we started with a beloved, iconic design and reinvented it from the inside out.”

The SE comes with the same 64-bit A9 chip as the iPhone 6 and 6s, as well as a 12 megapixel camera.

It comes in a bead-blasted aluminium finish and features a new colour-matched stainless steel inset Apple logo.

As well as the new iPhone SE, Apple has also unveiled a new version of its iPad Pro.

The company says the iPad Pro has been adopted by designers, illustrators and businesses and has released testimonials from designers and creatives at Pixar, Rapha and Citi Global Consumer Marketing.

John Lasseter, chief creative officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios says the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil are “the closest we’ve ever been able to get in the digital world to actually drawing on paper.”

Although I welcome an updated smaller variant, the whole Apple range is just getting messier and messier. From the inconsistent names like the 9.7 inch iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro to the design of the iPhone SE vs the 6S and 6S Plus. For a start I’d ditch the numbering system and simply call it ‘iPhone’ and ‘iPad’ every year etc. just like the Mac range. Same goes for branding. The Apple Watch and Apple Music use one typeface, whilst the other offerings use a different one. For a company that prides itself on well-designed products, its track record for names etc. is piss poor. Just my opinion of course.
