10 graduate design shows to look out for this summer

We’ve rounded up art and design colleges and universities from all over the UK, which will showcase graduate work spanning disciplines from product and textile to graphic and furniture design.

Bournemouth University

Douglas Powell - bicycle ambulance

What: Bournemouth University’s annual Festival of Design and Technology, which has been running since 1992, showcases designs, models and prototypes created by design, engineering and creative technology students for their final year project. Highlights from the upcoming festival include a wireless piano page turner and a mobile accommodation prototype for comfort-seeking festivalgoers.

Manchester School of Art

Degree Show 2015 13_24 June

What: The second oldest art and design college in the country (after the RCA) has been nurturing big-name artists and designers, including Sarah Burton OBE, since 1838. Course options encompass everything from interior design to textiles in practice, making for an eclectic bunch of degree shows. Graduate work will go on display at the All Saints campus, which recently benefitted from £34m worth of investment.

Leeds College of Art

What: This year’s end of year show, Made Here, will see the college buildings transformed into large scale exhibition spaces displaying work by graduates who have specialised in areas including printed textiles and surface pattern design. Visitors are also able to purchase different types of work at The Art Market, which can be found at the college’s Blenheim Walk site.

Glasgow School of Art

GSA Product Design - RBS, Generation Y Project

What: Graduate shows this year include work displayed by students from the school of Design, Fine Art and the Mackintosh School of Architecture. Look out for a collaborative project with the Royal Bank of Scotland focusing on 16 to 25 year olds and the future of banking and financial services in the UK, which includes a series of textured bank cards representing different stages of “financial health”.

University of Arts London

What: London’s biggest arts university will include end of year degree shows from the likes of Central Saint Martins and Camberwell College of Arts. The series of free art, design, fashion, communication and performance exhibitions will be taking place at locations across London. Highlights include a jewellery design project called Touch in and out: Oyster card acrylic nails, which would allow commuters to travel the tube with their fingertips.

Royal College of Art

What: Show 2016 is the last of the RCA’s three main graduate events this year, encompassing the School of Architecture; Communication; Design; Fine Art; Humanities and Material. It is one of the country’s most popular degree shows, regularly attracting crowds of up to 40,000. Sticking to tradition, alumni from the Visual Communication course are responsible for the show’s visual identity this year.

Goldsmiths

What: This year’s design graduate show, Known Unknowns, will take place away from the university’s south London campus at Brick Lane’s Old Truman Brewery. Showcasing the work of over 60 graduates, the show’s organisers describe it as exploring “the unfamiliar and complex fields of Known Unknowns”, adding: “The more we know, the less we know. More questions answered, more questions asked. We do not know everything. This body of work is a contribution to knowledge, accessible on an expansive scale.”

Loughborough University

What: Loughborough’s graduate show provides an opportunity to take a look at final year projects by Industrial Design & Technology, Product Design & Technology, Ergonomics and Design Ergonomics graduates. This year’s projects include a craft brewing product that can be used at home and a self-monitoring urban beehive. A select number of graduates will also show their work at the New Designers exhibition in London from 6-9 July.

Sheffield Hallam University

What: The Sheffield Institute of Arts’ degree show will take place at several venues across Sheffield Hallam University’s campus. It includes work by students from over 20 different disciplines, ranging from product and furniture design to metalwork and jewellery.

Plymouth

What: This month will see the launch of HOT ’16, Plymouth University’s annual art and design degree show. Work from graduating students will be shown, sold, or commissioned from the Architecture; Graphic Communication with Typography; 3D Design; Fine Art; Illustration; Media and TV arts; Photography; Digital Media and Animation, and Digital Art and Design courses.
