Scenes from an impending marriage

Agonising decisions over the dress, organising the venue, minor squabbles over the guest list: even Kate and Wills’ big day has some of the hallmark pitfalls of the average wedding.

But with just two weeks to go until the big day, the right royal pair could do far worse than to take a look at comic artist Adrian Tomine’s new book Scenes from an Impending Marriage, which is published by Faber and Faber at the beginning of May.

Tomine, who works for Esquire and The New Yorker and is the author of graphic novel Shortcomings, originally produced the book as a gift for his own wedding guests. It tells the frustrating, expensive, but often charming feat of organising a wedding in short vignettes on a particular theme, such as exercise or invitations.

The book highlights the absurd commercialism of marriage, from buying ridiculously expensive ties to feeling obliged to provide personalised chocolate bars, and the petty fights formed from the pressure to make everything perfect.

It’s an endearing read, especially when the newly-wed couple end up sharing their first meal as man an wife – a greasy kebab.
