Dutch consultancy Uxus reveals Tate Modern retail designs

Dutch consultancy Uxus says its designs for the retail spaces at the Tate Modern’s Damien Hirst retrospective are a ‘prototype’ that will be used throughout the rest of the space.

Tate Modern is currently undertaking a refurbishment and extension programme with Swiss architect Herzog & de Meuron, and Uxus says its retail designs will roll out as part of this work.

Uxus was appointed to redesign Tate Modern’s retail offer at the end of 2009 following an international strategic and credentials pitch against three other groups.

The consultancy’s four retail spaces for the Damien Hirst retrospective opened earlier this month and feature both Hirst products and Tate’s retail offering.

Uxus says the concept is ‘modular’ and ‘highly adaptable’. The consutlancy’s creative director George Gottl says, ‘Our challenge was to balance the needs of the retail experience with the aesthetic considerations of the artist and the industrial heritage of the museum space.

‘The result was a simple yet bold set of elements that echo Hirst’s pseudo-scientific artistic signature and the early-20th-century architectural Modernism of Tate Modern.’

Tate Modern’s extension is currently under construction.
