HMKM works on Galeries Lafayette outpost in Beijing

Retail design consultancy HMKM is working on interior designs for department store Galeries Lafayette’s Beijing branch, which is set to open in spring next year.

HMKM has worked with Galeries Lafayette for about ten years, including work on the Boulevard Haussmann flagship store. It and was appointed to the Beijing project following a four-way pitch in March last year.

The work is being driven from the London office, though HMKM will be seconding one of their team to Beijing for about eight months before the concept is handed to local architects to continue with the work

The project sees HMKM working across all areas of the store – except for the foodhall – including the building’s exterior, the interior architecture, lighting, windows, ceilings and the store atrium.

French graphic designer and illustrator Jean-Paul Goude has previously created graphic imagery for the store in France.

Alison Cardy, HMKM managing director, says, ‘We’re trying to get the Parisian spirit into the department store though influences from Parisian architecture, sensibilities and gardens. It’s trying to pick up on that aesthetic.’
