Olympic Torch and Royal Wedding Dress among Designs of the Year nominations

A total of 89 projects have been shortisted across the categories of architecture, digital, fashion, furniture, graphics, product and transport for the award, which was formerly known as the Brit Insurance Prize.

The architecture category features the 2012 Olympics Velodrome, by Hopkins Architects, and the New Mexico Spaceport, by Foster + Partners.

The digital category features the BBC Homepage Version 4, designed by the BBC, and Beck’s Green Box project.

In the fashion category, projects include the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress, by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, and the Brompton Oratory Jacket, by Will Carleysmith.

The furniture category boasts Arthur Brutter and Ido Bruno’ Earthquake Proof Table and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s Textile Field at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Graphics features Noma Bar’s Cut It Out installation and the Nokia Pure font, by Dalton Maag.

The product category features the 2012 Olympic torch and the Jawbone Jambox, by Fuseproject, while the transport category features the 787 Dreamliner, by Boeing, and the redesign for the emergency ambulance, by the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design and the Vehicle Design Department at the Royal College of Art.

The category winners and overall winner will be announced on 24 April, and all the nominations will be on show at the Design Museum in London from 8 February-15 July.
