Open Studio Club

‘I want to create the world’s biggest creative network by this time next year’, says Nick Couch, creative director of Figtree and founder of new website, Open Studio Club.

While this may be a bold vision, the concept behind Open Studio Club is a very clever and very simple.

Open Studio Club is based on the couch surfing model, which allows travellers to stay in other homes around the word, often in exchange for fellow globetrotters staying in theirs. This, however, is for creatives.

People can list their studios on the site for free, where they will stay for 30 days. Browsers can contact people for collaborations, swapping studio space or renting out their own.

The site was designed by Dutch designer, Michiel van Wijngaarden and built by Cure Studios.

Couch says, ‘People are working in more flexible ways and relying on their own networks. The other thing is cloud technology – people don’t need to always be physically located in the same place any more. Office servers are redundant and we can work anywhere now. I think with the nature of our economy the way it is people are having to find new and more interesting ways of working.’

Sounds like a great idea for those of us who are unemployed.
