Irma Boom’s new Rijksmuseum identity

Dutch designer Irma Boom has created a new identity for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Identity

The new branding replaces the previous logo, designed by Studio Dumbar, which has been in place for 32 years.

Mug

The Rijksmuseum first opened in 1800 and houses artworks by Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Vermeer and others.

Book

It is currently undergoing renovation, set to complete next year, which is being led by Spanish architect Cruz y Ortiz, with French exhibition designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte working on interiors.

Bag

Boom says, ‘My starting point was the fact that the Rijksmuseum is a national museum with international appeal. The design is clear and powerful and anchors the museum in the present.’

Pen

The new identity features the new de Rijksmuseum typeface, which has been developed by Paul van der Laan of the Bold Monday font foundry.

Book

The Rijksmuseum says the new identity uses a colour palette ‘the DNA of the Rijksmuseum’, which is based on highlights of the gallery’s collection and is used across different collateral.
