Strong growth for industrial design
Industrial design is performing well for the UK’s manufacturing industry, a new list of the fastest-growing manufacturing sectors indicates.
Design-led products such as motorbikes and bicycles top the chart, which is published today by manufacturers’ association EEF.
Modern Manufacturing – The High Performers reports that Britain’s production of motorcycles and bicycles has grown by 8.6 per cent a year in the five years to 2007, while the output of industrial equipment has increased by 6 per cent.
Domestic appliances have managed growth of nearly 5 per cent and production of industrial and agricultural instruments went up by 4.3 per cent. This segment – tenth in the list of fastest growers – is the largest in UK manufacturing, boasting a 2.1 per cent share of total output.
Triumph motorcycle company and bicyle producer Pashley both figure in the second-highest growth product category.
