German firm to work on Imperial War Museum North exterior

German landscape architect Topotek 1 has been selected as the preferred design team to work on the external spaces of the Imperial War Museum North in Salford.

More than 50 architects and landscape architects entered the Royal Institute of British Architects competition, with Topetek 1 seeing off fellow shortlisted practices KLA, White Arkitekter AB, Patel Taylor and Field Operations.

Topotek 1’s concepts for the exterior of the Daniel Libeskind-designed building are initial concepts, and IWMN will now begin fundraising and seek partners to realise the project.

The design features a new quayside walkway with 24-hour access across the water frontage, a landscaped garden built over the car park to give elevated views of IWMN and the Salford MediaCity:UK, a children’s play area and a water sculpture.

Jim Forrester, director of IWMN, says, ‘Topotek 1 [has] come up with a  great initial concept and we are ready to adapt its imaginative ideas to suit the fast-changing environment around the museum.’
