Turning ten
Electronic music bible Resident Advisor is celebrating its tenth birthday in true aural and visual style, taking on ten countries with ten parties and ten specially commissioned posters to accompany the events.
The series, entitled RA X, sees Resident Advisor selecting ‘ten artists influential in electronic music over the last decade to curate line-ups that include emerging talents that will influence the next ten years’ according to RA founder Nick Sabine.
He adds, ‘We’ve asked ten visual-artists to create a unique poster for each event. We’re really excited to see how it all comes together.’
Head of design at Resident Advisor, Paul Clement, says, ‘The brief was simple. We setup a guide with some basic detail in the footer, and gave the artist the majority of the space with a simple key-line, white corner-to-corner “X”.’
The hand silk-screened posters for each event are limited to 75 each, and will go on sale as each party’s line-up is announced. Participating artists include Trevor Jackson, The Designers Republic, Dutch artist Erosie Stefan Marx, Mike Cina, and Laurent Fetis.
Clement adds, ‘We’ve always been conscious of the relationship between information and design. In the earlier years, when RA was a side project I worked with various creative agencies.
‘It was the talented designers and creative types that influenced me personally to do more with RA. Both visually to make sense of the depth of information RA and to work to grow RA as a brand.’
The first of the decagonal celebrations will take place in London’s Cable Club this Saturday, with a line-up featuring Lawrence, Onur Ozer, Kyle Hall, Ben UFO and Trevor Jackson, who designed the event poster, as well as the secret ‘X’ headliner.
This will be followed by the Barcelona party on 18 June at BeCool, as part of Sonar festival, with a poster by Simon Cook.
While the designs aren’t strictly site specific, many of the artists are also getting involved in the look and feel of the spaces the parties will be hosted in.’ Clement says, ‘Trevor [Jackson] created his artwork with movement in mind, and is working on a concept to animate it so it can be displayed on the night in London.
‘We’re speaking to Stefan Marx, who’s produced the poster for Russia, about doing something specific for Arma17 as they have 3D mapped the entire main room in the venue, so it’s possible to do interesting things with the imagery.’
