This is the chain’s fifth site, with the restaurant situated in the Lyceum Theatre, a building with a façade dating from the 1830s. Very Good & Proper has designed the chairs for all Canteen’s branches, the first of which opened in 2009, though this is the first time it has created the entire interiors concept.

Patrick Clayton-Malone, creative director of Very Good & Proper, says, ‘This is the first Victorian building we’ve worked on with Canteen so we pulled back a bit on the mid-century modern stuff we’re usually influenced by. We’re trying to be sympathetic to the building so there’s definitely Victorian references throughout in the colours and the materials.’

The Covent Garden Canteen features an oak herringbone-floored dining room with seating against a tiled wall created form original tiles used by London Underground. The bar area using a zinc bar top, reclaimed Victorian mosaic floor tiles and bespoke bar stools and chairs designed by Very Good & Proper.

The main restaurant space also features bespoke furniture, with the ‘Covent Garden Chair’ in various colours used around round tables. The brushed brass Canteen Utility Chair, featured in the other branches, is used against the walls. A back-painted glass and gold leaf map of the UK is due to be installed behind the bar.
