Relaunching with the rather fun-sounding new Designival moniker, the former Design Symposium North, which takes place in Liverpool next month, has already lined up a dazzling parade of speakers and events.

Conceived in 2008, the two-day celebration of all-things-design was started by Liverpool-based design consultancies Black & Ginger, Smiling Wolf and Uniform.

This year’s event will be the biggest in its history – reflected in the line-up of speakers, including New York designer Lance Wyman, the man behind the lovely Mexico 68 Olympics logo, and SomeOne co-founder Simon Manchipp. The pair will be discussing the present and future of branding, chaired by Creative Review editor Patrick Burgoyne.

Scott McCubbin, Uniform associate director, says, ‘Wyman and Manchipp are lining up for a feisty head to head after Wyman described London 2012 as “brash and outlandish” and didn’t live up to its potential.’

Illustrator and toy designer James Jarvis will also be talking about his influences, experiences and how to balance client work with ‘labours of love’. He will be ‘live doodling’ throughout the event – which may well fit into the aforementioned labour of love category.

Jarvis says, ‘I’ve no idea what will be the starting point, but it clearly you will have to be there and be part of it. I’ll talk about my experience, my work, all in the context of live drawing.’

As well as ‘masterclass’ workshops from Liverpool consultancies Apposing, Milky Tea and Uniform, the event will also include studio tours, exhibitions, portfolio surgeries and a RIBA ‘archtiour’ of interesting local buildings. All rounded off, of course, with an after-party into the wee hours.

Designival takes place on 22 and 23 November at Camp And Furnace, 67 Greenland St, Liverpool L1. For more information and tickets visit http://www.designival.com/
