Draw to Explore

Is it a mountain? Is it a pencil? Well it’s both – and it’s also an invitation for creatives and non-creatives alike to contribute to the rather sweet Draw to Explore project.

Conceived by consultancy Fiasco Design, Draw to Explore sees the Fiasco team send out postcards with a black pencil shaped space for recipients to fill in with doodles and drawings as they wish.

Ben Steers, Fiasco Design managing director, says, ‘We wanted to do something a bit different. The idea is “draw to explore” – to start engaging with people we admire and whose work we like and people aren’t necessarily illustrators but are creative and don’t get to pick up a pen very often. We don’t want to be elitist.’

He adds, ‘Conceptually it’s not mind-blowing, but as people manipulate the template in different ways it shows how people can approach it in a completely different way to how we would.’

The idea is that as more postcards are sent back, the Draw to Explore web page will become a constantly-changing, generative Pinterest-like site.

Steers says, ‘We wanted to set up an ongoing thing – as soon as you add more content the whole thing changes. I like the idea that it’ll keep evolving.’
