Inspired – Jack Renwick

I’m a junk junkie. Jumble sales, car boot sales, antique malls, charity shops in crap towns, salvage yards, repossessed houses, someone’s garden, a church hall, blankets of stuff lying on the ground…

You find the best stuff in junk. Every box and bag has the potential to hold some kind of visual treasure. It’s the most exciting thing around.

Flea markets are my favourite, full of stuff from everywhere, good and bad, all thrown at you in the quickest hit, no controlled flow of a gallery or nicely captioned pieces in an exhibition, just stuff everywhere for you to take in all at once. Amazing typography, unusual colour palettes, every style of imagery across all sorts of objects, all of it working its magic to fill your mind with a million ideas.

Websites, blogs, magazines, etc. have pre selected the work it assumes I’ll find interesting, whereas junk doesn’t care if I like it, it’s there, lying in a pile and if I can be bothered to look and turn a few things over, I know I’ll discover something beautiful.
