Love is the rug

Not-for-profit business Node has teamed 18 designers up with a Nepalese fair trade group to create a new rug collection for the Design Museum.

Run by children’s book illustrator Chris Haughton and Nepal-based entrepreneur Akshay Sthapit, Node aims to connect artists and designers with craft-based social projects.

Node has been working with Kumbeshwar Technical School in Kathmadu, a weaving school that works with disadvantaged adults to provide fair wages as well as teaching literacy and skills. The school also funds an orphanage for 25 children.

Following exhibitions at London’s So Far the Future gallery, Node is now creating a collection of 18 different designs for the Design Museum.

The collection will feature 18 rugs by 18 artists, each 2m2, hand-signed and produced to a limited run of 10 each.

Contributors include Neasden Control Centre, Donna Wilson, Clayton Junior and Serge Seidlitz, and each artist received a rug of their design as payment.
