Myspace to launch new site design

Social networking and music website Myspace is set to launch a new site design, with a teaser video screening today.

US and Austrialian consultancy Joseph Mark is understood to have worked on the design.

Myspace was bought by Specific Media Group and pop-star Justin Timberlake jointly for approximately $35 million (around £21.5 million) in June last year. In January 2012 at the Consumer Electronics Show, the company announced that it would introduce MySpace TV with Panasonic.

The new site, which can currently be previewed at https://new.myspace.com/play, asks users to submit their email address for an invite to the new service.

While the new site is not yet live, the video shows that uses can either create a new account or log in with their existing Twitter or Facebook details, and migrate photos or other data with them.

The site is heavily music-focussed, with options to browse albums and see which songs and artists are most popular with friends or in different geographical locations. Users can also create and share playlists and assign a ‘profile song’.

It is unclear whether the music component will be powered by a bespoke MySpace music service or use an existing platform such as Spotify.

As with the Facebook timeline model, a user’s image is shown in the top left hand corner of the screen with a larger image forming the background. Other photographs are arranged and tagged in a similar style to image-sharing site Pinterest and the Tumblr blogging platform.

Features from previous iterations of the site, such as the ‘top 8’ friends feature appear to have been retained, and users can sort friends into different groups with which to share different information in a similar feature to Facebook.

Myspace has not yet disclosed when the site will launch, or who has worked on the new design.

In November 2010, Myspace launched a new site design and a logo designed by London consultancy Campbell Hay. The logo used a Helvetica ‘my’, followed by an extended underscore symbol to delineate a space.

In the same month the site launched Facebook Connect, integrating it with Facebook.
