World Design Capital 2012 was Finnish capital Helsinki, which used the accolade to celebrate its national design legacy, as well as promote its contemporary design scene.

World Design Capital for 2014 will be Cape Town in South Africa. The Cape Town organisers say they want to use the city’s design resources to address its Apartheid past and ‘make it a more liveable African city’.
