Realism in Rawiya
All-female photographic group Rawiya features members from across the Middle East, all of whom have also established individual careers as photojournalists.
As such, the Rawiya photographers have an eye for a compelling human story, be it cluster bomb survivors trying to rebuild their lives, Iranian mothers of martyrs, a Palestinian all-female car-racing team and Jerusalem transsexuals.
Indeed the word Rawiya itself translates as ‘she who tells a story’.
Realism in Rawiya, an upcoming show at Nottingham’s New Art Exchange, will present work by the collective’s Myriam Abdelaziz, Tamara Abdul Hadi, Laura Boushnak, Tanya Habjouqa, Dalia Khamissy and Newsha Tavakolian.
The show will reveal often overlooked Middle Eastern stories, such as Tanya Habjouqa’s Arab Body Building Championships images, or Myriam Abdelaziz’s photos of women taking part in the Egyptian Revolution of 2011.
Realism in Rawiya is at New Art Exchange, 39-41 Gregory Boulevard, Nottingham NG7, from 25 January-20 April.
