Jerwood Makers Open programme launches

Jerwood Visual Arts is launching the Jerwood Makers Open initiative, an annual exhibition series that aims to support and showcase new work by emerging artists in the applied arts.

The programme follows the Jerwood Contemporary Makers exhibition series, which ran from 2008 to this year and saw a group of makers from across the creative disciplines awarded a total of £30 000 to take part in an exhibition with a different theme every year.

Jerwood Makers Open starts next year and will see four bursaries of £7500 awarded each year to makers submitting proposals for new works. These works will be exhibited at a group show at the Jerwood Space in London.

Makers will be selected by potter Emmanuel Cooper, choreographer and artistic director Siobhan Davies and Jonathan Watkins, director of the Ikon Gallery.

Jerwood Visual Arts says, ‘This initiative will offer an open submission opportunity for makers at the early stages of their careers to develop their creative ideas independently of specific commissioning structures.’

The deadline for entries is 21 February 2011. Applicants must be within ten years of graduating or setting up their practice and must be resident in the UK. For more information on how to apply, visit www.jerwoodvisualarts.org.

The Jerwood Makers exhibition will run at the Jerwood Space in London from 13 July to 28 August 2011.
