Made Fresh in the North
This weekend as part of Newcastle’s Ouseburn Open Studios event, Made North is debuting its Made Fresh concept – showcasing work from designer-makers produced exclusively in the last year.
Made North, which runs a Sheffield gallery space and organises the annual Made North design conference, will be displaying a number of contemporary design objects at the Toffee Factory from emerging and established Northern designer-makers working across print, graphic, product furniture, textile, jewellery design and ceramics.
Other studios opening their doors at the complex include The Biscuit Factory, The Biscuit Tin Studios, Cobalt, Ouse St Arts Club, Lime Street Studios, Mushroom Works and Northern Print.
Work from more than 200 designer-makers and artists will be on show, and a free ‘hop-on, hop-off’ bus service will be carrying design-hungry shoppers between venues throughout the weekend.
Sharon Thomas, Toffee Factory customer service administrator, says, ‘The open studio weekend is a really nice way to see what’s going on on your doorstep, and generate local interest.
‘It is always one of the best weekends of the year, but tends to be temptingly expensive in the run up to Christmas. Luckily I’m working this one, so won’t be as tempted!’
Made Fresh can be found at Toffee Factory, Lower Steenbergs Yard, Quayside, Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1. For address information for the other venues go to www.ouseburnopenstudios.org/venues/. The open studios event takes plane on 23 and 24 November.
